TROTTING Winter Meeting At Addington Today

The meeting between Wairau King and Kennoway in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes will be one of the highlights of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Addington today.

Wairau King and Kennoway are the only horses of their age to have won at the trotting gait this season, and they are expected to dominate the finish.

There is also keen rivalry between the owners of the two horses. Wairau King is raced by Mr H. G. Andrew', of Blenheim, who is an uncle of Mrs R. E. Laing and a brother-in-law of Mr F. W. Jarman, who race Kennoway., Wairau Queen, the dam of Wairau King, was bred by Mrs Laing and her husband, C. M. Laing, who trains Kennoway.

Wairau King, unbeaten in his first three starts, will probably he favourite for today’s race. He had his fourth start at Hutt Park on May 30 when he broke in the first furlong and a half and lost all chance. If he is as good as he was when he won his three races, he should just about win here. Kennoway is an improver. He won impressively on the first day of the recent Ashburton meeting after trotting sound races in his other appearances earlier in the season. On the second day at Ashburton he finished brilliantly for second to Clackmannan, but was promoted to first after an inquiry into the galloping of the winner. Kennoway has become more

solid with every race, and he will only have to trot as well as he did at Ashburton to be the hardest for Wairau King to beat. Ahumai, Court Out and Glenfern appeal most of the other six candidates for the race. Ahumai seems as though she would be more solid than the other two She usually begins smartly and seldom makes a serious mistake. She has been placed in her last three starts and should be in the money Court Out finished fourth over two miles at Ashburton on May 30. but was disqualified for galloping. The Court Martial filly has shown useful speed and should be prominent, although it is difficult to see her troubling

Kennoway or Wairau King. Glenfern, a member of O. J. Kirby’s Wyndham team, impressed when he finished second to Gold Craze at Oamaru last month. He has failed in two subsequent starts, but it mgiht be as well to overlook those failures if the track is firm. Two Unraced Double Cord and King’s Harvest will be having their first starts at a totalisator meeting in this race. Double Cord, a member of S. Campbell’s Waikari team, is by Concord from Producer King’s Harvest is trained by A. J Bourne and is by King Scott from Gambler’s Harvest. The remaining runner, Jackie Grattan. is trained at Lower Hutt by N. P. Croft. He is by Jackie Boy from Daphne Grattan. He has failed to trot solidly in his three starts this season and makes little appeal. The appearance of the smart Auckland three-year-old, Damian, in the June Handicap, will arouse considerable interest. M. Holmes has been engaged to drive him and after his impressive win at the Morrinsville meeting last Saturday he will probably start a firm favourite. He has won five races this season and has not yet come to the end of his run.

Super Attack, a winner on the first day at Ashburton and an impressive fourth over 12 furlongs two days later, should be the hardest for Damian to beat. Super Attack is racing most generously and he should be in the money. Highland Heath. Pagliacci. Josie Gay and Bindora are others expected to show to advantage. TAB. Double The T.A.B. double will be run on the Williams Handicap and the Monte Carlo Handicap Bonny Starlet, Seafield Lad and Zany form a likely trio in an open field for the first leg, in which the chances of Robert Dillon, Johnny Guitar. Blue Emperor. Bon Ton and Twinkle Hall must be respected. Ceremonial will probably start favourite for the second teg, in which Achates. Spring Lynne, Mighty Mina, On Side, Stoker. Frown and Waitaki Child also appeal. n . Au Fait and Highland Heath are selected to win the on-course double, which will be run on the Reta Peter Handicap and the Au Revoir Handicap. Ordeal and Mighty Brigade may offer most opposition to Au Fait, while Highland Heath is expected to find Super Attack and Pagliacci hard to beat Weather prospects are fair and the track is expected to be firm.
