DO IT YOURSELF

One of the social phenomenons of the last few years has been the outbreak of do-it-yourself disease. Our fathers and grandfathers took it as a matter of course that they were responsible for minor repairs on the domestic front, but a good many householders today regard themselves almost as trained technicians. There is hardly a job about the house, from freeing the garden tap of the wooden plug so carefully inserted by junior, to re-tiling the hearth, that these good citizens do not undertake with

a cheerful smile and voluminous printed instructions on how to go about it Their confidence is amazing. Given a fretsaw and one of these children’s puzzles where numbers are joined by pencil to make a drawing, they feel capable of running up a suite of bedroom furniture in an afternoon. But it would make an interesting survey to find out how many homes in Christchurch have rooms with the walls stripped down and left for weeks, rooms with the ceiling and one wall only painted, garages half built, paths naif

completed. For notwithstanding the magnificent kits and volumes of instructions collected by the do-it-younelf experts, the plumbers .and painters are still in business. But there is one do-it-your-self job which always turns out satisfactorily. There is nothing simpler than putting an advertisement in the classified columns of ‘The Press”, nothing more rewarding.
