Tax evaders under various categories to the number of 344 are named in a Gazette published Last night. The list, which consists of private persons and companies convicted or charged penal rates, is for the year ended March 31 last
A total ot 118 persons and companies is shown as the number convicted of wilfully making false returns of income or of giving false information. This list contains the name of a farmer with £31.779 as the tax evaded and £13500 imposed as penal tax; a butcher with £19.975 and £12.500 respectively; a farmei with £10,140 and £5500; and a draper with £12.228 and £7500
One hundred and forty-six are listed as persons or companies charged pena] tax for evading or attempting to evade liability for “any sum properly payable as a charge on income other than sa’ary or waees” The largest amount listed as tax evaded in this schedule is £10.147 against the name of a farmer on whom £l5OO was imoosed as penal tax. The smallest is £36 charged against an electrician who was penalised by an additional £5O.
