INVASION REPORT

Junk Alarms Taipeh

<Rec. 1150 p.m.) TAIPEH, June 12. An announcement by the Chinese Nationalist Defence Ministry that Communist China had launched a sea and artillery attack against the Matsu Islands off the coast of China caused a flurry of alarm today before it . was found to be exaggerated. The “invasion'* force consisted of a solitary three-masted junk and Communist guns began shelling Kaoteng Island. in the Matsus, 150 miles north of the Quemoy group, in an apparent attempt to cover its approach. The American Associated Press said the junk also fired, but speculation that it was carrying invasion troops was considered “fanciful." The island’s guns replied to the Orc. and the ship turned and fled. Taipeh reported that the Chinese Communists had shifted their artillery barrage to lob 430 shells on Kaoteng.
