“Killing Season Not Over”
The export meat killing season is by no means finished in Canterbury, in the opinion of Mr W. M. Cleland, general manager of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd. Mr Cleland said yesterday that while it was logical to assume that the volume of stock available would decline over the next few weeks and that freezing works staff would be reduced accordingly, it was highly probable that export killings would continue to the end of June. “Much will depend on the weather in the next two weeks. It has been most gratifying to find that lambs, in particular, appear to have done well over the last five or six weeks,” said Mr Cleland.
“The percentage of second quality has been high but average carcase weights have in some cases been the best recorded this season.**
Mr Cleland said that permanent staff manned essential services at the Islington works over the week-end. Killings were carried out for the local trade and the company is confident that it can fulfil its commitments for this section of its business. The situation regarding the dispute with the freezing workers’ branch union remained unchanged, Mr Cleland added.
