DRAINAGE BOARD NEWS IN BRIEF
Apology From Boat Club The New Brighton Power Boat Club apologised to the Christchurch Drainage Board on Tuesday evening for a launch having made several fast runs up and down the Avon river, creating a considerable wash, and said that all members were being warned in future any offending boat would be suspended immediately. Replying to the board’s complaint of the incident, the club said that the owner of the boat had been advised and asked to apologise To the board. The boat concerned was not registered in the club. Memorial Avenue Laterals.— The board agreed to meet half the cost of replacing sewer laterals in Memorial avenue damaged during the reading contract. Flooding Complaint.— Another complaint of flooding in the Carlyle street area was received from a factory at the corner of Brisbane street and Carlyle street. The owners said that large stocks of clay which must be kept dry were held at the factory and on three occasions floodwaters had entered the yard. An investigation of the area and preparation of a scheme to improve drainage were in the hands of the longterm planning division, the works committee reported. Grant to St. John Ambulance.— The board’s grant of 30gns for the year to the St. John Ambulance Association was renewed. Hornby Septic Tanks.— The board agreed to accept sole responsibility for the maintenance of septic tanks and the disposal of the effluent at the Horqby State housing area from April 1. but declined to meet the cost of extensions to the effluent lines, as proposed by the Ministry of Works. Horotane Valley Drain.— The board met a request of the Heathcote County Council to assume control of a drain in Port Hills road which forms part of the land drainage system of the Horotane Valley. Technical College Grant.— A grant of £lOO, covering two years, was made to the Christchurch Technical College. Sockburn Sewer.— The Ministry of Works advised the board that the estimated cost of laying the Sockburn collecting sewer from the Alloy Steel Company’s corner across the Main South road and along the deviation to Racecourse road was £ 15.400. The Ministry will do the work at the board’s expense. The estimate was regarded as conservative by both the Ministry and the board’s the construction committee reported.
