SHED CATCHES FIRE

Good Save At New Brighton Flames from a burning shed adjoining a house in Shaw avenue, New Brighton, were just licking through the open back doorway of the house when the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived in response to a call at 9.19 p.m. last evening. “They made a great save,” said Mr C. G. Grubb, the occupier of the house, commenting on the work of the brigade in stopping the flames from soreading further into the house. He did not know how the fire started.

The interior of the shed, which Mr Grubb uses as a workshop, was gutted and he lost or had severely damaged a wide range of tools and equipment. The items about which he was most concerned last evening were a number of model steam engines built by his father. He was able to find most of them but their small, intricate working parts were covered by soot and water and he was unable to tell how badly they were damaged. Model aircraft engines owned by his son, Peter, which were kept in anothe*- adjoining shed, were untouched. Mrs Grubb was ill in bed and was alone in the house at the time when she smelled smoke. She shouted out to some children nearby and one of them ran to the station to give the alarm. The brigade arrived three minutes after receiving the call and soon had the fire under control. Two units from the New Brighton station attended.
