BELGIAN ROYAL CRISIS AVERTED
Former King Will Quit Palace
(NJZ. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, May 27. The Belgian monarchy, tottering on the brink of extinction since 1940, had received a shot in the arm which would either kill or cure it, British press reports said this morning.
All newspapers featured the Brussels announcement yesterday that the former King, Leopold 111, and his commoner wife, Princess de Rethy, would not in future live in the rambling Laeken Palace with young King Baudouin on the edge of Brussels.
It was officially stated that the former King’s decision to leave the palace was his own, but the “Daily Mail” reported from Brussels that the Government would have resigned if Leopold had stayed.
