RACING Master David In Form For Birthday Handicap

Master David, a consistent, hard-wearing Massowa gelding, will probably be favourite for the Birthday Handicap at Wingatui On Saturday. Master David is an Otago representative in a race that has attracted winter performers from Riccarton to Invercargill.

The Birthday Handicap is the main flat race and the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the opening day of the Dunedin winter meeting.

Master David bas been a sound campaigner for his Wylie's Crossing owner-trainer, Mr G. B. Thomson, this season. He struck a solid patch of form in November, when he won at Invercargill, and he has hardly run a bad race since, though he has found a win elusive.

Master David raced twice at the Canterbury Jockey Club's autumn meeting, each time over a mile and a half. He was fourth in the Great Autumn Handicap, won by Canon, and third in the Sockbum Handicap, won by Great Sensation. - ■

Another very good performance on Master David’s autumn campaign was a sixth over two miles in the Autumn Handicap at Trentham.

The second leg of Saturday’s TA B. double is the Winter Handicap, seven furlongs. There are form runners in all sections of the handicap. Form from the Southland winter meeting will prove of value if Glenpark, Fahoud. and Black Star are to the fore in the finish. -

Glenpark and Fahoud are laststart winners in the field. Another is the Orari-trained Appreciate, which was successful at Nelson. South Canterbury will have another strong representative, Marsana, whose brilliant finish at Waimate last Saturday gave him second to Kinsimm in" the sprint. One of . the best of the Otago sprinters win. probably be Cashmere, which raced consistently at the Riverton Easter meeting. Cashmere beat some very smart winter performers to win the Canterbury Jockey Club’s August Handicap last season. Cashmere went amiss when be ing prepared for the Winter Cup last year and did not resume racing until earlier this year. Fields and- form for the doubles races are:— BIBTHDAY HANDICAP, Of £700: one mile and a half. 1384 WATER BOV (3) 9-7.—Latest win over 101 150yds at Riverton at Easter. Carried 9-3.
