GOLF Top Teams Win Easily In Woodward Cup

The three strong teams in the Woodward Cup inter-club golf contest all had very easy wins when the second round of matches was played yesterday. Christchurch A, which has six Canterbury representatives in its team, beat Russley B by eight games to nil; Waitikiri, which has seven, beat Avondale, 4-2; *nd Russley A, which has six, conceded only half a point to Christchurch B.

J 1 surprise, it was that Christchurch B did not cause a surprise This side has caused many upsets in the past, but all four ; op Russley players were in top Xo H n «t Avondale yesterday. D. Foxton played immaculate golf against J Hartley. He was hardly ever at fault in anything ™„ d,d and ne gave Hartley no exc ® pt at the first hole, which was the only one Foxton lost. Foxton drove well and played some very fine irons. He was one out - but was one t^. e l rt ? er slx holes Played. A acke lL len «th- but he kept hitting straight, and he kept putting most effectively. On the 10 greens from the fifth to the fourtPries 1 ’ Hartley one "PUtted eight

j.-P Bull looked for some time “ he might cause a sensation by beating R. C. Murray; he was two up with eight to play, and throughout the first half he made a succession of excellent shots. He holed LJ£- f °ot putt at the third for a one of about six feet at the fifth for another birdie. Thi= two-hole advantage he held grimly. ep . through the desperate events tenth hole, but he crashed at the eleventh, missed a putt of 15 Inches at the twelfth, and from there Murray was in complete charge. They both started poorly in ‘fierce cold but after a hole or two Murrav driving magnificently. He has adapted an American practice of cutting his left arm away around his body at the start of the followthrough, which gives all his shots • suggestion of fade, but which allowed him to get his irons to pitch beautifully. At the sixth (48 0 yards! he was pin-high with a drive and a spoon, and he hit another tremendous drive at the tenth. His iron second was trapped In a bunker barely short of the green at this 458-yard hole. Bull, rneanwhile. had been having his» difficulties. He cut his drive badly, tned to hit a spool' over the trees separating the tenth and eleventh fairways, but was caught by them. His ball dropped in the middle of some poplars, and he had only the narrowest of gaps through to the green He hit an iron truly but too well, ran through the green f Pd ,_ u P • bank into some extremely thick and uninviting rough. But careful calculation and some timber operations. he pitched out beside the pin and had what a bystander described succinctly as a • fighting five.” It gave him a half, for Murray came too strongly from the trap. But Bull played the eleventh badly, and after his tragic threeputt at the twelfth his chance had gone. Good Short Game

R. K Aitkinson, whose short game ‘ was outstanding, was too over scratch when his game with D. F. Williamson ended, and F. W. Williamson was also uncannily accurate ' about and on the greens against J. R* A. L Charles gave Christchurch B half a point, and was unluckly not to beat D. C. Watson. Charles missed a putt of three feet on the last green. Watson’s was even shorter, but he was clearly off-line, and- won the match only with a neat- In-off from Charles's ball. • At Wafmairl, where the players were for once grateful for the trees because of the shelter they afforded, Waitikiri had an easy victory over Avondale. R-"J. Ramsay (Waitikiri) and F. W. Roberts have had some notable tussles in the past, and their match yesterday was another extremely close one. But the shot of the day was played by Waitikiri’s number eight, J. P. Devine. He was six up after 11 holes against R. A. McNeill. At the 435-yard dog-leg twelfth, he hit a fine drive then a magnificent spoon which finished three feet from the ntn; the eagle ended the game. The greens at Waimalri were remarkably good, and visiting players said they believed they were of a higher quality than ever before. The long-hitting E. H. Richards gave R. J. Charles a hard ficht in tne match between Russley B and Christchurch A at Templeton. Charles played excellent golf, but he was only one up at the turn although one under scratch. Richards was usually some 50 yards ahead of Charles off the tees, but he could not always sustain his accuracy and Charles won on the seventeenth. Competition points are:—Waitikiri 2.
