NARROW WIN FOR MULTI BELLA OVER CLACKSTON

The Invercargill-owned and trained Multi Bella gained a well-earned win in the May Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. She was a little slow at the start and was badly checked when Vanover broke in front of her in the first 100 yards. She gradually improved on the inside, but racing to the straight she was showing up wide out behind Firebell, Spring Lynne, Clackston, Gypsy Belle, and Irish Wit. Clackston raced past the leaders nfcar the furlong, but he was soon joined by Multi Bella. They had a great struggle over the last 75 yards, with Multi Eella responding best to win by a head. Clackston had every chance and he raced right up to his winning run at Oamaru a week earlier. He was three lengths in front of Nadjehda. which lost a good position when she broke at the end of two furlongs. She did well to finish so close up. Spring Lynne battled on for fourth, a length behind Nadjehda. with Firebell tiring to fifth, ahead of Gypsy Belle, Mainland, and Irish Wit. Croughton Belle. Chelsea Lady, and Vanover lost their chances at the start. Sharwalo Impresses Sharwalo recorded an outstanding performance to win the Second Improvers* Handicap. He broke and was very slow after starting from the second line. He was still last with six furlongs to run, but began to move up three and then four wide racing to the back straight. He continued his run racing to the straight where he was five or six wide on the outside of Little Christine. Generator. May Fight. Space King and True Guest. Sharwalo was shading the leaders just inside the furlong and he continued his run to hold on and win by a long neck. Red Belle, after finding it difficult to hold her position early, came home well for second, half a head in front of the fast-finishing Radiant Hanover. Space King was a neck back fourth, a short length In front of May Fight, which covered extra ground, with a long neck to Powersaw, which could not get clear. Hideaway was a short length back, just ahead of True Guest, Donna and Regal Duchess.

Easy For Lucky Dora Lucky Dora followed up a useful second at Oamaru a week earlier with a decisive win in the Members' Handicap. A. C. Amyes, who had won the previous race with Sharwalo, had her well placed all the way She was lucky to escape trouble with less than six furlongs to run when a number of horses, including Dark Satyr and Subador, met interference, Aurelia was left clear with five and a half furlongs to run and she was joined near the half-mile by Parados. They raced together to the straight, with Lucky Dora just behind them, four lengths ahead of Satyr, Gay Craig. Subador. Dark Louise and Astray. Parados was soon clear, tint Lucky Dora raced past him with ease and was not troubled to win by two lengths. Parados made a good first race start for the season by holding on for second, three lengths in front of the fast-finishing Dark Louise. Astray and Subador heading a tired lot. Patchwork Wins Patchwork returned to form with a decisive win in the First Improvers’ Handicap. She began well and R. Young had her handily placed all the way. Double Dale took the lead from Geraldo w’ith two and a half furlongs left and he turned for home ahead of Patchwork, which was improving fast. Stoker, Geraldo. Bespoke and Skyleada. Patchwork raced past Double Dale with ease soon after straightening up and she did not have to be .asked for a serious effort to beat Stoker by half a length.

Stoker was never very far away and he improved sharply racing to the straight. He battled on gamely for his placing, six lengths in front

of the tiring Double Dale, with eight lengths to Geraldo. which forced the pace in the middle stages after losing ground at the start. Bespoke did not show much fight in the straight and was well beaten in fifth place, ahead of Skyleada. Glenoware, Lilt and Gatley. The favourite. Some Lad. lost ground at the start and he w'as not persevered with over the last halfmile, finishing a distant thirteenth.

Chances Are Narrowly Chances Are made amends for her second to Billy Again at Forbury Park when she held off Kennow’ay by a nose in the Welcome Handicap. Chances Are began well from 36 yards and she was ninth at the end of two furlongs. She had improved two places at the half-mile and racing to. the straight she was showing up behind the pacemaker. Basha Felika. Bandsaw. Mayfair Star and Supercraft, with Kennoway and Glorified next.

Kennoway'* performance was a good one as he broke at the end of a furlong and a half and again with three furlongs to run.
