SOUTH CANTERBURY COMPETITION
Decisive Win By Temuka More powerful forwards gave Temuka a decisive 16-3 win against Star when the South Canterbury Rugby Union’s senior competition was continued on Saturday. The loosely knit Star scrum could not match the heavier country pack which was in complete charge for all of the first half. At half-time Temuka led 13-0, and, although Star improved in the second half, Temuka was never in danger. However, with a reliable goal kicker Star could have narrowed down the margin. In the Temuka forwards, M. Kerr, R. Nolan and T. Coughlan were an outstanding trio. Tries for Temuka were scored by T. Trevalyan (2), J. Hammond and Coughlan. R. Cowan scored for Star. Mackenzie, making its first appearance at Fraser Park this season, was unlucky to lose 0-3 against Old Boys. Play did not reach a high standard, the backs on both sides being handicapped by the greasy ball. The only scoring in the match was a penalty kick by the Old Boys’ wing three-quarters. N. Williams. five minutes from the finish. The Mackenzie full-back, J. Clelland, played an excellent game, and a hardworking trio in the forwards were M. Casey, W. Williamson and B Anderson. At Waimate, Zingari were beaten 15-9. Geraldine drew with Celtic 6-6, and thus retain a one point lead over Celtic in the championship. i I |
