SCHOOL POWER TARIFFS
Review Expected “Very Soon”
The claims of schools for preferential treatment in electricity charges will be included for consideration in a review to be made soon, according to the engineer-manager of the Municipal Electricity Department (Mr G. H. Battersby). In a supplied statement to “The Press” Mr Battersby replied to remarks reported to have been made by the headmaster of the Cashmere High School (Mr T. H. McCombs) at a meeting of the school board of governors on Thursday evening. Mr McCombs had been reported as saying that the M.E.D. charged schools a special rate of 2d a unit, whereas the SpringsEllesmere Board charged schools at the same rate as ordinary consumers— Jd a unit. “When the department’s tariffs were readjusted a year ago to meet the steep and unprecedented rise in the cost of power from the Government system, it was explained by the City Council that a full review would be made at the end of the first year’s operation,” Mr Battersby said. “This review will be made as soon as the result of the first year’s operation at the increased rates is placed before the council. which should take place very soon. Full consideration will then be given to the review of a 3 rates. The claims of schools for preferential treatment will be included for consideration in thU review,’’ he said.
