POWER LINE FAULT

North-West Area Blacked Out A fault in the 66,000 volt transmission line from Islington to the jPapanui sub-station of the New Zealand Electricity Department in Greers road blacked out much of the north-west area of Christchurch for 21 minutes on Saturday evening. It is not known how the fault occurred. At 5.45 p.m. a transmission line jumper clamp on a tower near the Papanui sub-station failed and the entire area fed by the sub-station was cut off. After the fault had been isolated, the line was disconnected and a second line that was available was brought into service. It took some time to locate the trouble and then to carry out the necessary switching but the power was restored 21 minutes later. A gang went out yesterday morning and had replaced the jumper after about two hours work.
