Frogman Repairs Gap In Tanker
(Rec. 11.15 p.m.) ADELAIDE, May 17. A frogman last night completed repairing a crack in the side of the 8633-ton tanker British Union, about 10 miles out at sea from Port Hobart. The tanker berthed at Birkenhead oil berth this morning to pump out a cargo of 2.500.000 gallons of petrol. No ship has been allowed within a mile of the tanker as 700 gallons of petrol poured daily through the crack, creating a serious fire hazard. There was a strict ban against smoking or striding matches aboard shin and th® crew were warned against any activity which could throw a spark.
