To London By Steamroller
(From a Reuter Correspondent) JOHANNESBURG. Two Transvaal men, Mr Andries McDermott, a 32-year-old mechanic, and Mr Claude Rudman. a 30-year-old builder, are to leave Johannesburg on a 6000 mile overland journey to London with an eight ton steamroller. They believe they can do the journey in six months if they “push it.” They intend travelling 18 hours every day at an average speed of five miles an hour. The steamroller is fitted with a special gear enabling it to reach a maximum speed of 10 miles an hour. It will also be fitted with two swivel seats and a. 35-gallon water tank. Holes will be drilled in the back wheels into which iron spikes can be screwed when the roads are sandy or muddy. The tent in which they will sleep and the rest of their equipment will be carried in a small trailer.
