ST. MARGARET’S BALL

400 Guests Attend Annual Function Winter weather was forgotten last night when 400 guests gathered at the Winter Garden for the annual ball of the St. Margaret’s College Old Girls’ Association. Before the ball members of the organising committee, their husbands, and partners were entertained at a dinner party. Baskets of ivy, white bracken, and scarlet berries hung from the ceiling—and in the alcoves the same theme was carried out with large white bowls of greenery, silver flax, and red berries. Red balloons and festoons of green and white added a warm glow to the hall. The supper tables were decorated with posy bowls of red flowers and fruit. A welcome novelty was the serving of hot soup before the guests left. Mrs A. H. Johnstone (president of the association) received the guests, among whom were Mrs C. L. Young and Miss K. P. Edwards (first assistant at St. Margaret’s College). The following kindred associations were represented:—Christ’s College, St. Andrew’s College, Boys’ High School, and Wanganui Collegiate School. The committee responsible for the ball was Mrs Johnstone, Mrs E. A. Gpillermo (secretary), Mrs C. L. Sturge (treasurer), Mesdames R. J. Dendle, J. B. Williams, J. B. Jameson, H. H. Wauchpp, E. T. H. Taylor, H. H. Deans, J. K. Lawrence, J. N. Matson, G. Rich, W. R. Wood, and Misses L. Gardner, G. Rankin, and J, Gebbie. Mrs Johnstone’s frock of forest green velvet embossed with grey had a full-skirted back. The fitting bodice had a deep V at the back. Mrs Guillermo wore a fullskirted frock of ice-blue and silver brocade, with a midriff and bodice formed from narrow folds. Mrs Sturge was dressed in black flocked nylon, her frock featuring a cross-over bodice and very full skirt.
