Army Fencers In Malaya

Two members of the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Regiment’s, four-man fencing team reached the finals in the Malayan division of the Far Eastern Land Forces’ fencing competition and will compete against other Commonwealth fencers in Hong Kong this month. The two fencers are Captain C. V. Wilson, who qualified in the foil, and Private Curtain (sabre). Captain Wilson has been fencing for the last 20 years. He was introduced to the sport by Ser-geant-Major Sutton, of the New Zealand Permanent Staff in Burnham Military Camp. While a prisoner of war in Italy in World War 11, he formed a fencing club in Camp 52, of more than 50 members. When he moved with the Ist Battalion to Taiping he formed a fencing club for civilian and Army members in the town and the club has a membership of 15, including four from the Ist Battalion. Private Curtain first fenced In Melbourne when he was 17 and his interest was aroused again when the Taiping club was formed.
