U.S. BASE AT HAREWOOD
Plans For Using N.Z. Equipment Christchurch-made, rather than American-manufactured equipment, is being sought by the contractor preparing the galley of the United States Navy base at Harewood. The contractor, Mr F. C. Cole, said last evening he would go to Washington to discuss the subject. The purchase of New Zealand goods would bring dollars into the country, he said. “The galley equipment involves an expenditure of £19.000, which will be spent in Christchurch if I can convince them it will be just as efficient and cheaper to do it that way than bring out their own galley equipment for installation as they had planned," he said.
Mr Cole said that the American authorities would bear the cost of his visit to Washington. No date for the trip had been arranged but he expected that details for it would be completed in the next few weeks.
