SHIPS RETURN TO KAIAPOI
Bar Conditions Unsuitable With unsuitable conditions on the bar of the Waimakariri river, the Collingwood Shipping Company’s motor ships, Paroto and Ranginui, returned to Kaiapoi yesterday morning without attempting to cross. The ships are remaining loaded and will attempt to cross the bar once the weather clears. The Paroto had been tied up at Kaiapoi since she was refloated from a sandbank inside the bar of the Waimakariri river on May 4. The Ranginui arrived at Kaiapoi last Sunday.
When the Auckland harbour bridge is open for business, noone will be allowed to cross it free of charge, at least for the first year, the chairman, Sir John Allum, indicated at a meeting of the bridge authority. He was commenting on an application from the Northcote sub-branch of the Plunket Society, which asked for a free travel permit for its nurse. Sir John Allum said: “We should give ourselves 12 months before considering applications such as this.”
