City Address By Expert On Mental Deficiency

WELLINGTON, May 14. “Mental deficiency in New Zealand will be examined by Dr. L. T. Hilliard, physician superintendent of the Fountain Hospital for Mental Deficiency, London, during his short visit to New Zealand which begins on Sunday. Dr. Hilliard, who is chairman of one of the committees set up by the World Health Organisation, will give addresses in each of the main centres. Throughout his stay, Dr. Hilliard will be tho guest of the Department of Health and will vigit institutions administered by that department and the Education Department. He will give two public addresses, the first on “Community Care of the Feeble-minded,” in Christchurch on Monday evening, and the second. “A New’ Approach to the Problem of Mental Subnormality,” at Victoria University of Wellington on the following Monday evening. On his arrival at Harewood from Australia at 3.5 p.m. on Sunday, Dr. Hilliard will be met by Dr. R. G. T. Lewis, director of the Division of Mental Hygiene. He has no official engagements that day. On Monday morning he will proceed by car to Templeton Farm, where he will lunch at the nurses’ home after an inspection of the farm. At the Ministerial rooms in Hereford street that afternoon he will meet 20 representatives of

organisations for afternoon tea at 3.30. On Monday evening he will address a meeting at Jellicoe Hall, chaired by Dr. Henry Field. On Tuesday he will visit tlie Child Health Clinic, Hereford street (9.30 a.m.), and will go on to Merivale Lane Occupational Centre at 1.30 to meet the intellectually handicapped children’s parents group. A short visit will be made to Marylands Home for mild to moderately sub-normal boys, after which he will go to Templeton for lunch.

On Tuesday afternoon a talk to senior staff at Templeton is scheduled.

Dr. Hilliard will be in Dunedin from May 19 to May 23, Wellington from May 24 to May 25, Hamilton and district from May 26 to May 28, and Auckland from May 28 to May 31. He will fly from Auckland to the United States.
