Freedom Of Thought

Sir, —I think the 8.8. C. speaker, referred to on page 23 of your issue of May 14, was wrong in saying that “within 50 years we shall be able to prove that God does not exist’*; but the reverse also would be true, as no-one knows exactly what the word means. It may seem clear to some that the universe was created, for reasons quite unknown to us, by Jesus Christ. But it is by no means so clear tc a very large number of Her Majesty’s loyal subjects. They, scientists or otherwise, should surely be allowed their freedom of thought and speech without public persecution and official denunciation. It would have been no less unfair if the reference, for some reason, had been to “the bland voice of some tuppenny ha’penny Anglican or Unitarian or Roman Catholic or Member of Parliament,” for example. And then the fat would have been in the fire.—Yours, etc., TOEREG WHITHG. May 14, 1959.
