DUNEDIN, May 14. A sound half-mile by Subside was the best trial timed at Wingatui this morning. Other Southland candidates which showed up were Ken, Ravelston, Storm Haven, King Cassock and Mary Brown. Subside <B. J. Anderton) ran out the distance strongly to shade her stablemate, Bobwood (R. J. Skelton) in 52sec. the last three furlongs in 39 3-ssec. Subside, which was a close second to The Ranger over a mile at Riverton, is engaged in the Clifden Handicap, the open sprint tomorrow. Most of the fast work was held on the plough, which provided firmer footing than the course proper. Ken (B. J. Anderton) and Maybeso <R. J. Skelton) were together over the same ground in 53 l-ssec, running out the last three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. Ken is one of the early favourites for the first division of the Novice Ravelston (H. T. Anderton) gave the impression that he could have improved on his dash over three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. An impressive winner last week, he will be a well-backed runner in the Te Tua Hack Handicap. Storm Haven <H. T. Anderton) and King Cassock (B. J. Anderton) were on terms at the end of five furjongs in a shade under Imin 7sec. Both horses were running on at the finish to work clear of Depend <B. P. Kennedy) and cover the last three furlongs in 41sec. Storm Haven and King Cassock are rival candidates with recent good form to back their claims for the Tuatapere Hack Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Mary Brown (R. J. 12 3-ssec. Mary Brown was a fast-finishing fourth in her race last week and will be a well supported runner in the first division of the Novice Stakes. Le Roi (H. J. Powell) completed his work by coming home the last three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. He will revert to 'hurdling in the Pukemaori Handicap. This time was equalled by Rhythmic Reel (R. J. Skelton), which is now a member of H. J. Powell’s team. Paper Clip Paper Clip completed a round of strong pace work by coming home the last three furlongs on the course proper in 44sec. This time was equalled by Smart and Panel, which were given a similar task. The trestles were on the extreme outside of the track. Black Star, one of the early favourites for the Clifden Handicap, was restricted to strong pace work. Similar tasks were given to Count Aven and formal. Golden Morn was well handled by the former North Island rider, P. Coleman, when he gave an attractive display over a round of six hurdles at a sound pace. The winner of the Glenljam Hurdles at Wyndham early in the season. Golden Morn gave a faultless display and is an improved jumper. Ben Ledi <B. P. Kennedy) and Meridian <G. E. Lowry) kept together, following their stablemate. Golden Morn. Glenbridge (M. Blair) was accompanied by Flying Doctor when he earned his qualification ticket as a hurdler. Master Ascot (G. E. Lowry) and Cassius (J. D. Pankhurst) gave a safe display over a round of hurdles. Pot Luck (B. P. Kennedy) showed considerable promise in his early education as a jumper, iHe is the latest addition to

hurdling from the Anderton establishment. From his performance yesterday he should not take long to make good in his new role. The Boissier gelding surprised by. finishing third in the Awarua Handicap at Invercargill last week.
