RACING Bosky And Champion Go Well Over Fences
Bosky and Champion gave competent displays of jumping in a run over eight trial steeplechase fences at Riccarton yesterday. They are being prepared for steeplechases at the Dnnedin winter meeting, and should make good impressions on their campaigns. Bosky (J. L. Coulter) could have probably worked clear of Champion (E. B. Skelton) from the start, but he was restrained and they stayed on terms to the end. They showed sure-footed-ness at each fence, and kept up a solid pace. Bosky has been nominated for the Otago Steeplechase on the first day of the Dunedin meeting. There is no open steeplechase on the second day, and Bosky might run in the Otago Hurdles. Bosky was third in the Otago Hurdles two years ago. Later that year he successfully switched to steeplechasing at Washdyke and ran third against the top class ’chasers in the Eric Riddiford Steeplechase at Trentham. Champion, a winner over hurdles for M- J. Wadley’s stable earlier this season, should have little trouble making the grade over country. Stamina has marked his best performances as a hurdler. For Hurdling Saltash. a five-year-old halfbrother to Ark Royal, is being educated for hurdling. He shaped well in two runs over the two pony hurdles at Riccarton yesterday. _ Saltash is trained J>y; TL Johnstone for Mr A. J. Blakeley, for whom Hickory. Stick and Irish Saint were successful hurdlers. Malona, which was spelled in the Waikato after being gelded during the summer, has rejoined F. A. Roberts’s team at Riccarton. Malona did not shape like a two-year-old winner in his campaign extending over four races earlier in the season. He showed good speed in training, but did not have the ability to accelerate quickly at the start of his races. Time should be a valuable ally
for this big Fair’s Fair gelding, and his second-season form might be of a high standard. He belongs to the same family as Yahabeebe and several other brilliant gallopers.
