CONGESTION AT LYTTELTON

Overseas Ships Diverted The continued congestion of shipping at Lyttelton has resulted in three overseas ships being diverted to other ports. The Port Invercargill was diverted to Timaru and will not now call at Lyttelton; the Van Waerwijk was sent on to Dunedin and will return to Lyttelton and the Port Wanstead also may not come to Lyttelton.

The Carnatic and the Chowa Maru arrived yesterday afternoon and will remain at the anchorage until berths are available. Several coastal ships which have been in port for several days, are still awaiting labour. Yesterday morning the Lyttelton Waterfront Workers’ Union held its monthly stopwork meeting but rain which fell all the morning, would have prevented any work being done. The Wellington Star sailed on Wednesday evening and the Ceramic and the Holmwood left last evening. The departure of the Holmglen, for Wellington with the Holmburn’s cargo, was deferred until today.
