Changes Sought In Election Of School Committees
WELLINGTON, May 14. The* method of electing committees to intermediate schools was described as an "extraordinary cumbersome system” by Mr T. A. Murphy (North Shore), at the New Zealand Educational Institute’s anntial meeting today. Mr Murphy was speaking to a remit from North Canterbury seeking to abolish the representation of contributing schools on committees of intermediate schools. “We are fretting and fuming in Auckland over this extraordinary system of school committee election. It is cumbersome and hardly ever gets you the right people,” he said. Mr W. H. Hampton (Hutt Valley) said he strongly opposed

any move to remove representation of contributing schools from intermediate school committees. "The contributing schools in our area take the closest possible interest,” he said. "There is even competition to be appointed to our committee. As far as my area is concerned, it would be quite wrong to abolish contributing representation.” Miss A. S. Green (Wanganui) said there was only one intermediate school in Wanganui, but interest from the contributing schools was very high and positions on the committee were keenly sought. Mr C. L. Harper (North Canterbury) said if people from contributing schools were really keen to be on the committee of

Asht bridge) told the meeting the only ; pre-requisite to being elected to - an intermediate school commit- * tee was nomination by a parent who had a child at the school. - Anyone, regardless of whether - they were a parent or even lived / in the district, could be elected, f The remit was carried.
