TRANSPORT INQUIRY
Submissions By Carriers
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 14. At today’s sitting of the Government - transport committee, presided over by the Minister of Transport (Mr Mathison) submissions were made by the Dominion Sawmillers’ Federation, the carrying industry (through the New Zealand Road Alliance and the New Zealand Carriers’ Federation) and a private haulage firm. The prepared statement by the carrying industry stated that it recognised that much of the work of the industry consisted of cartage to and from the rail, and to that extent the industry’s service depended on co-ordination with the railways. Nevertheless, the carrying industry was satisfied from experience that the time had arrived when a more flexible service by road, as well as rail, should be provided in order that the best use be made of the Dominion’s transport facilities. The carrying industry submitted to the committee that it was in the national interest that New Zealand had an economic and efficient road transport industry. “Everything that can be done to promote this within the general transport structure will be well worth while,” read the statement.
“The licensed industry today, in spite of its troubles, is giving good service, and within the limitations imposed on it, is meeting all the demands made on it with efficiency and dispatch. “There is spectacular development in the country with plenty of work to bfe done and in this road transport must play an essential part.”
