COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL

Judges Praise Performers Ballet, tap-dancing, piano solos and national dancing all contributed to a well balanced programme which, in the Civic Theatre last evening, ended the fifth day of the Christchurch Competitions Society’s annual festival

In the boys’ recitation event in the Jellicoe Hall, Keith Ellis, of

Christchurch, received the highest marks awarded during the competitions by the speech and drama judge (Mrs S. K. Murray, of Wellington), who assessed the boy’s work as outstanding. A 14-year-old Christchurch girl, Barbara Truscott, who was previously praised for her work, last night added to her laurels by winning each of the 11 sections she competed in. The best talent ever seen in

Christchurch for many years was how the national dancing judge (Mrs E. Ritchie, of Blenheim) summed up when she presented the society with a cup for future presentation to boys in the national dancing sections. Mrs Ritchie was thanked by the president (Mr J. T. O’Brien).

The greatest success of the competitions so far had been the support of the public which had done much to establish the competitions in- their rightful place once more, said Mr O’Brien. In the following results competitors are from Christchurch unless otherwise indicated.
