STRANGE BIRD AT NELSON
Swallow Plover Out Of Season (New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, May 13. A strange bird found dead on the Appleby mudflats 10 miles from Nelson has been identified by Mrs P. Moncrieff as a pratincole or swallow plover. Mrs Moncrieff, a well-known ornithologist, said today that it was a surprise to find a member of the plover family at this time of the year because the pratincole regularly migrates in flocks from India and eastern Siberia to Anstralia. They return to the east in the autumn. The pratincole is about nine inches long, with orange-brown upper parts, reddish under-wing markings, and a forked black tail. The bird will be sent to the ' Dominion Museum.
