Otago's Wintry Snap With Snow, Hail, Rain And Wind
(A«w Zeaiana Press Association)
DUNEDIN, May 13. Snow, hail, rain and wind today gave Otago one of the sharpest wintry snaps at this time for many years. Considerable snow fell in most parts of Central Otago and in one or two districts of West Otago. The worst hit area appeared to be around Oturehua, Central Otago, where about three Inches of snow was lying in the morning. Snow in this district was heralded by an unusually warm wind on Tuesday night. Falls eased early in the afternoon but the sky remained overcast and further snow was expected. Another heavy fall was reported on Coronet Peak, near Queenstown, and skiers are now assured of excellent conditions during the coming week-end. Snow on the peak at the end of last week was sufficient to make the starting to tows worth while and many enthusiasts revelled in the unusually early start. There was no snow in Queenstown today, but falls continued on the hills most of the day. The level is down to about 1600 ft. Heavy over-night rain in Dunedin gave way to a sunny morning, but this did not last. More heavy showers of rain and hail fell throughout the day. Possibly the worst conditions came at the most inconvenient ; time, just as the Otago University ’ capping procession was making 1 its way down the crowded streets about mid-day.
Nature chose this moment to turn on two heavy hail storms which, although detrimental to the spirits of the students, and he spirits of the students. _ and spectators joined in the. spirit of the occasion.
