Crossed Alps On Elephant
(From a Reuter Correspondent) PARIS A Frenchman, Louis Harel, who claims to have crossed the Alps on an elephant 24 years ago, said that he would be glad to give some useful advice to the English historian, Mr J. M. Hoyte. .who plans a similar exploit. Mr Harel said he joined the American adventure novelist, Richard Halliburton in July. 1835, on a trip over the Swiss Alps to Italy on Dolly, an elephant weighing 54841 b. He said it took three days to reach the refuge of Mount Saint Bernard, where the ratified air felled Dolly. It was two days later, after Dolly was given about 2001 b of sugar to strengthen her, that the party continued down the Italian side of the mountain, Mr Harel said. This descent took three days. The group arrived in Turin to wild acclamations of the populace. They were forbidden to continue on to Rome by order of Mussolini.
