DEVELOPMENT OF INDUSTRY

If the present economic trend continued, young New Zealanders would have to go into'secondary Industrie's, and should go into them for the prosperity of the country, Mr J. P. Liewin, director of the Development Division of the Department of Industries and Commerce, said today. He was speaking on the future of New Zealand industry at the course for careers advisers and vocational guidance officers, being held in Wellington by the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation. It was in secondary industry that careers would open up. In the next 20 years 125,000 workers would have to be absorbed by manufacturing industry. Mr Lewin predicted the longestablished skills would continue to break down. The old conception of three classes of workers —the unskilled, the skilled tradesman and the professional man, with no place for anybody in between—was going. In 20 years there would be more jobs available for girls, as well as boys, and there would be an increasing diversification of occupations. New Zealand should keep up with the technical developments throughout the world. Manufacturers must seize those developments and it was essential they define the techniques so educators could understand them.
