“Mystery Flares”

An Auckland astronomer, Dr. C. A. Corban, said that he considered the mystery flares reported in the Bay of Plenty on Saturday morning were merely part of a meteoric shower, comprising particles from Halley’s comet, through which the earth passes annually from about May 4 to May 15. Dr. Corban said that he himself saw two meteors on Friday morning and three on Saturday morning. The “New Zealand Herald’s’’ astronomical correspondent agreed that this was a likely explanation of the reported flares. He said this annual meteor shower could provide a dozen bright meteors an hour. These were visible early this month in the north-eastern sky between about 3 a.m. and dawn.—(P.A.)
