UNIVERSITY BIBLE COURSES
Serious Consideration Advised (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 13. Bible history and literature courses in New Zealand universities should be seriously considered, said the Rev. J. D. Salmond, in the opening address oh religion and education to the National Council of Churches life and work conference at Ardmore today. He considered it serious that at a time when militant pagan philosophies had captured one-third of the human race, but because of New Zealand’s secular inhibitions and cultural time lag, students should be allowed to pass through college without having the opportunity to study historically and objectively the religion and book that had played all-important parts in moulding Western civilisation. Laying down general principles, Dr. Salmond said education must have a considerable measure of autonomy, subject to the overall purpose of God. Pursuit of truth in all realms of knowledge, including religious knowledge, should be encouraged.
