CHILLER BEEF COMPETITION
Change Urged In Price Rule
A suggestion that the Meat Board’s conditions for the annual chiller beef competition held by the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association for the board could be “with advantage” redrawn, to ensure that at least the equivalent of the best current price was paid for the competition cattle, was made by the secretary of the association (Mr H. M. Studholme) at a, meeting of the general committee yesterday. In his report on the last competition, Mr Studholme said practically no chilled beef had been exported from New Zealand this season, and none from the South Island. The competition conditions required that all cattle graded chiller were paid for at the chiller schedule rate, but no chiller schedule had operated in the South Island this season.
“I telephoned the Meat Board on this point,” said Mr Studholme, “and was told that the pay-out would have to be at the South Island schedule rate for frozen beef. At the time of the competition this was 115 s for 1001 b—about 30s to 35s below the Addington price. “It would appear that the conditions could with advantage be redrawn to ensure that at least the equivalent of the best current price is paid for the competition cattle,” Mr Studholme said.
