PROMOTER GOING TO AUSTRALIA
“Offering Cream Of N.Z. Talent”
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 7.
Knowing that he will have the best talent in New Zealand to offer Australia the New Zealand show promoter, Mr A. J. Brown, will leave for Sydney and Melbourne today. Mr Brown has an appointment with Jack Davey, Australia’s leading television and radio personality, but he also intends meeting representatives of Melbourne’s television station. GTV9, and the Macquarie radio network. During the last eight months, 60 talent quests all over New Zealand have revealed a wealth of artists who according to Mr Brown only need “publicity promotion and a chance to make good.” Mr Brown is taking a briefcase of photographs and recordings with him —a less bulky “package” than on his last trip several years ago when he had the horse Reformed with him and came home with a third place in the Melbourne Cup. Mr Brown said he wished to make it quite clear that although the finals had been held it did not mean the end of the talent quests. “I have just returned from Wellington and the Director of Broadcasting, Mr J. H. E. Schroeder, could not have been more helpful, when I outlined my ideas for promoting New Zealand entertainers.
“Television is just around the corner and when it comes we must have something to give. People will not be satisfied with canned entertainment.”
Mr Brown said he was naturally disappointed that the winners of the £lOOO “Search for Stars” quest, the Elsa Hodge Trio of Southland, would be unable to tour New Zealand with his show and go to Australia with him. "Family commitments make it impossible for them to travel. I do not know who I will be taking with me in their place.”
