Golf RUSSELL GRACE CUP

South Island Section Won By Otago

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 8. Otago unexpectedly won the South Island section of the annual women’s golf tournament for the Russell Grace Cup at St. Clair today. The team was in third place after three rounds, but two wins then gave Otago the lead over Southland.

Displaying outstanding form from first player to last, Otago trounced the Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast by 6 matches to 0 in the morning, and against South Canterbury in the afternoon won by 5 matches to 1. These two large margins, the biggest of the tournament, enabled Otago to head the field.

Southland, the leader after the first three rounds, had sound wins over both Canterbury A and Canterbury B today, but failed by 11 points to catch Otago. The highly-fancied Canterbury teams, which have dominated the series since it began in its present form several years ago, did not produce the form expected. Final points (based on one point for a win and half a point for a halved match) were:—Otago 201, Southland 19, Canterbury A 16, South Canterbury 14, Canterbury B 131, Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast
