Hautapu A Firm Favourite

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, May 8. Hautapu, unbeaten in his three starts this season, will be a hot favourite for the Great Northern Stakes, one of the feature races on the opening day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Alexandra Park tomorrow. He is not expected to be troubled by the heavy going. Most opposition to him may come from Baby Trust and Prince Tangier, while there will be considerable off-course support for the Canterbury colt. Bon Deed, a halfbrother to Bon Ton.

The double will be run on the Adams Memorial Cup and the Hobson Handicap. Fair weather is predicted for tomorrow. but the track will be heavy after rain earlier in the week. Selections:—

11.15 a.m.—Winter Handicap: Welwin. Pukepoto, Stingray.

11.55 a.m.—Great Northern Stakes: Hautapu Baby Trust, Prince Tangier.

12.35 p.m. 7—Cornwall Handicap: Caricature. Zany, Loyal Parade. 1.15 p.m.—Adams Memorial Cup: Girl Brigade, Our Tim, Captain Star.

1.55 p.m.—Mangere Handicap: General Advance, Melrose Girl, Royal Token.

2.35 p.m.—Stewards’ Handicap: Annual Report, Battle .Cry, Legislate. 3.15 p.m.—Hobson Handicap: Damian. Susan Blue. Cruising Dell. 3.55 p.m.—Telegraph Handicap: Teremoana, Friendly Smile, Bon Ton.

Forbury Meeting Abandoned

The Forbury Park Trotting Club has decided to abandon the second day of its winter meeting, which was to have been held on Monday. Members of the committee inspected the course at 1 yesterday and found the track to be in shocking condition, while the car parks were waterlogged. 4 Even with good drying over the week-end, the committee felt the track would not be suitable to race on by Monday. The Forbury club doubts whether it will be able to use the permit before the season ends on July 31- If the club does not use it, the New Zealand Trotting Conference and the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Anderton) will grant permission for some other club to use the permit for this season.
