TROTTING Sun Chief May Win Again At Oamaru

The Oamaru colt, Sun Chief, is expected to gain his fifth successive win in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes, one of the feature races at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s jubilee meeting today. His ability to handle the rain-soaked track will be put to the test, as this will be the first time he has raced on anything but firm going. Sun Chief is the best horse of his age produced this season, his racing having been marked by his great gameness after forcing all the pace in his four appearances. His connexions claim that he is a better horse when driven in behind, but he is such a brilliant beginner that he has been in front from the start and his driver, D. J. Townley, has been content to let him pace along freely. He has drawn No. 1 today and should again be in front from the start.

Jonboy Star created a good impression when he won the Two-year-old Stakes on an easy track at Methven last month. He ran out the two furlongs in the uphill Methven straight most determinedly and won more easily than the official margin of half a length over Calumite would suggest. Jonboy Star has drawn wide out, but that should not stop him making a bold showing. Calumite showed improvement on his previous efforts when second to Jonboy Star at Methven. He has not been hurried and he has shown sharp improvement in recent weeks. He should again be in the money. Sally Boy disappointed at Methven after boring badly for most of the race. His previous form had been of a high standard, and he might do better today. Orient Night was most unlucky at Hutt Park and finished fifth. With better fortune today,, she may be in at the finish. Blue Prince, Arania, Dark Wonder and Lanthea are others expected to show to advantage. Fresh Start Some Lad, one of the top three-year-olds ' of the season, is to reappear after an enforced spell in the R. A. McDowell Handicap, and in spite of his lack of recent racing, he is expected to win. Some Lad won the Riccarton Stakes and finished second to Blue in the New Zealand Derby Stakes. The easy track should suit Some Lad, which has been troubled by recurring soreness. Space King, a placegetter at Forbury Park, is another three-year-old, although he is not in the class of Some Lad. He has raced consistently and should do best of the remainder. Nadpehda, a fast-finishing fourth at Methven, Patchwork, Dither, and True Guest are others expected to race well. Kennoway’s effort in the J. Henderson Handicap will arouse considerable interest. He had his first start at a totalisator meeting at Rangiora last month, and finished fast for third to Clamour and Supercraft. He had kept a straight course over the last 100 yards, he might have troubled the winner. He is a good type of three-year-old, and a bright future is predicted for him. Supercraft was a useful third to Billy Again and Chances Are at Forbury Park last Saturday. The opposition here, does not look to be as strong, and he should again be in the money. Mayfair Star was not disgraced when she tired to sixth at Methven. That race should have improved her and she is expected to be harder to beat in this field. Glenfem, another three-year-old. has finished sixth and seventh in his last two starts. He has a big reputation in Southland and might be capable of a bold showing. Cappy Rowan, Flametta, Mandoza, Stranraer, and Lady Claymore appeal most of the remainder. The double will be run on the Oamaru Jubilee Cup and the George Bruce Handicap. Aksarben, Bonny Starlet, and Guard’s Brigade are selected for the first leg, while Au Fait. Moon Boy. and Ordeal should do best in the second. Prospects are for fair weather today. but the track will be soft after heavy rain earlier in the week. Fields are:— J.
