THIEVES FIND SAFE ALMOST BARE
Missed Payroll By Strange Chance
(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, May 8. For the first time in more than two years the payroll for employees of the Henderson and Pollard, Ltd., sawmill at Minginui, amounting to more than £4OO. was taken to the home of an official rather than be left in the office safe last night.
This was the night intruders raided the office and stole the safe, which contained a mere £7 in cash.
It was stated this morning that there was no reason for not leaving the money in the office: it was just a spur-of-the-moment action, which proved frustrating for the intruders but highly beneficial to the company. Entry to the office was gained through a window which was smashed, but the unauthorised persons retreated—with the safe —by orthodox methods through the main door, which was left ajar. Detective H. G. Daulton, of the Rotorua C. 1.8., is investigating.
By squeezing minerals at high temperatures in the laboratory, scientists are mimicking mineral transformations that go on miles below the earth’s surface. The efforts are being rewarded with artificial jade crystals.
