HARBOUR BRIDGE GUARD
Auckland Outbreak Of Vandalism
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, May 8.
A 24 hour guard has been mounted on both ends of the 3348 ft-long Auckland Harbour Bridge following an outbreak of vandalism which included the painting of signs on girders.
Because of what he termed “stupid vandalism and dangerous behaviour” children have climbed up on the low protective railing along the sides —the chairman of the bridge authority (Sir. John Allum) has expressed concern about what might happen if the bridge is thrown open to pedestrians before the official opening on May 30.
Pedestrians will be barred when the bridge is operating. The privilege of a walk across the bridge could be entirely withdrawn if more trouble is experienced.
