DAIRY INDUSTRY SITUATION

“Unity Never More Necessary”

(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 8. Unity was never more necessary in the dairy industry than now, Mr J. S. Hickey, deputy chairman of the Dairy Board and Taranaki ward member, told the Taranaki ward conference of the board at Stratford today.

“We face the most serious situation that the industry has ever known.

“In the past we have been down in the depths but the whole country was with us then. In the last 23 years we have had the ‘make believe’ guaranteed price. It is a wonder that it has lasted so long. Our realisations went up and up and the economy of the country was geared to our prices and rose too.

“When our price began to toboggan backwards toward our realisations, our costs did not cotne back. They did not even remain stable, but went up, and that led to the dangerous and invidious position that we find aurselves in today.” It was unfortunate that in this situation “when the country and the Government should be considering how to get us out of :his situation we face a Governnent that is hostile to us and that aas no intention of helping. “The whole of our industry is in this up to its neck and if ever there was a time when we should all stick together and present a common face and voice to our—l was going to say enemies but :hat is perhaps not the right :erm—position, it is now. “We have had only hindrance from the Government and as a result of no action last year at this time, we have lost £1.000.000 {because we were hindered from getting it Not only we, but the whole country, should unite to see that the industry’s situation is rectified.’’
