THIEVES MET BY POLICE
Million-Dollar Robbery
TRENTON (New Jersey), May 8. Three, thieves were arrested last night as they left a hotel carrying about one million dollars worth of furs and jewellery stolen from the room of a woman bank president. Victim of the theft was Mrs Mary Roebling, the 53-year-old president of the Trenton Trust Company and the first woman member of the American Stock Exchange. Police said the men were captured as they stepped from the hotel lift, the loot still under their arms in cartons. The three men said they had decided to stage the theft after seeing a newspaper picture of Mrs Roebling, who is a widow, police claimed. They had known that Mrs Roebling would not be home last night. But, police said they heard of the plan from “confidential” sources and trailed the thieves from New York to the scene of the crime nearby. Detectives waited until the raid was completed then pounced. Police said the men would be charged with breaking, entering and larceny and possibly other offences.
