The Ideological “Gulf”
Sir, —So long as men and women on both sides of the Iron Curtain are exhorted by public figures to believe that between them there is a gulf which separates what is undoubtedly right from what is undoubtedly wrong, the cataclysm of which Sir George Mallaby spoke at the University graduation ceremony, will be hard to avoid. I think many people will agree with me that this very prevalent black-and-white attitude towards other societies is quite deplorable and potentially dangerous. Instead *of crusaders with closed minds and drawn swords, there is a great need in each camp for men who will recognise the good features of the rival system and who will, attempt to lead our planet towards a synthesis incorporating the best features from both.r-Yours, etc., D. F. LAW DEN. May 8, 1959.
