WAIKAIA BRANCH RAILWAY
Last Train To Run Next Week
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, May 6.
The Railways Department’s decision to close the Waikaia branch line will come into effect on Saturday, May 16, and the last scheduled train to use the line will run tomorrow week.
Two trains a week run to Waikaia from Riversdale at the moment, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. About a week after the last scheduled train has run, an engine will collect any rolling stock remaining at intermediate stations, and thereafter the only activity on the line will be demolition work.
It is expected that the 11 miles of track will be pulled up and the land and buildings sold by tender. Experience has shown that the land is usually bought by adjoining farmers. In addition to the station buildings at Waikaia there are small buildings at six intermediate stations along the line.
The line is the second branch line in Southland to be closed. The one previously served the Hedgehope area.
