Tibet
Si r __One point missed by ‘Old China Hand” is that all Western European concessions were taken from the Chinese while they had bayonets at their throats. In the past, the governing class of China were as inefficient as the British in East Africa, for instance. We even forced the Chinese to eat opium and let us build railways whether they liked them or not. The Communist Government threw the rotten governing classes represented by Chiang Kai-shek out on their necks. The Communist progress over the last 10 years has been outstanding, and now the Chinese can stand on their own feet and ignore the hypocritical threats from imperialists. The Communists are just common workers. They are making more progress in a few years than the British in East Africa have done in centuries. — Yours, etc.. RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, May 7, 1959.
