GRADUATES’ BALL

Capping Week Function

The council of the University of Canterbury welcomed 270 graduates with their partners and other specially-invited guests to the gala formal social function of capping week, the graduates’ ball, held in the Winter Garden last evening.

Guests were received at the ball by the Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Mr D W Bain) and Mrs Bain, the ViceChancellor (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn) and Mrs Llewellyn, and the Registrar (Mr G. G. Turbott) and Mrs Turbott. Guests of honour for the occasion were the United Kingdom High Commissioner to New Zealand (Sir George Mallaby) and Lady Mallaby, the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) and Mrs Manning, the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev Martin Sullivan) and Mrs Sullivan, and the Town Clerk (Mr H. S Feast) and Mrs Feast. Academic dress was worn for the occasion and the gowned figures of graduates during the first dance made an impressive spectacle. Lady Mallaby wore a dress ot moss green lace over tulle with cape sleeves and a full skirt.

Mrs Bain chose a long, bouffant, blue and silver moire frock with an empire-style bodice finished with pink silk roses. Mrs Llewellyn’s silvery brocade was instep length in front, with an inverted pleat, adorned with a bow, falling to the ground at the back.

There were about 500 present for the evening. The ballroom was decorated with shrubs, potplants, and pink chrysanthemums
