LITTLE RIVER FLOODING

Water Recedes In Township

Flooding at Little River had receded considerably yesterday and of the water had drained back into the creeks, according to local residents last evening.

Some water was still reported to be under a few houses and the creeks were still high but a repetition of the floods of the last two days was not anticipated The road through the township was clear and the detour through the railway yard was not necessary yesterday During the flooding a foot of water was believed to have been in the Little River library. Although a few residents evacuated their houses it was believed that no water entered the buildings. Mr L. J. Humphries evacuated his house from about 9 p.m on Tuesday to 2.30 a.m. on Wednesday when a nearby creek overflowed.

“The water built up around the house but it didn’t get inside. It was about 3in off the floor I didn’t even know it was running around the house until a neighbour told me.” said Mr Humphries. He returned with his family to the house when the flood waters appeared to be subsiding. Although the peak of the flood m his area was on Tuesday night, the water in the township appeared to be higher on Wednesday night, he said. ‘The water was up to the veranda on my house but was not in the house. We lifted the carpets but stayed in the house during the flood,” said another Little River resident.

By 4 pm yesterday a little less than 9in of rain had fallen in Little River since the ram began, and at Puaha Valley more than 11 inches of rain had been recorded.
