Tibet
Sir, —P. J. Alley says in 1949 the Chinese got rid of “Old China hands” to the great advantage of the Chinese. No-one will dispute this point considering they took over the valuable foreign property, at the same time. The foreigners developed the Shanghai International Settlement from a mud swamp. When the Communists took over they acquired a modern city built up by foreign enterprise. The parks were administered by the municipal council composed of British,' American, Scandinavian, Japanese, and Chinese
councillors and any notice displayed would have been placed there by the council by whom Rewi Alley was employed. Rewi Alley has undoubtedly done good work for the Chinese; but he obviously expresses the Communist viewpoint. This is clearly indicated ip the extract from his letter in question. I could not imagine a New Zealander residing in China bping free to write anything not favourable to the regime.—Yours, etc. OLD CHINA HAND. May 5, 1959.
