Coal For Japan
Sir,—l read in your columns some days ago, with considerable dismay, about the apparent stoppage of the shipments of Paparoa coal to Japan, largely because of the West Coast harbours being unable to accommodate ships of sufficient tonnage to make this venture a payable one from the Japanese viewpoint. I remember many years ago my father-in-law, the late Captain A. McDougall, who was then superintendent for the Shaw Savin Company, being invited to report on the possibility of a deep sea harbour at Point Elizabeth some ten miles up the coast from Greymouth. Captain McDougall’s report was a very favourable one, and it occurred to me that even at this late date the development of a harbour at this site might be worth while. Whether there is sufficient coal left today to warrant the outlay is a matter for experts, but a scheme such as this would help the export of our present stocks of coal and also provide much-needed overseas exchange.—Yours, etc., WILLIAM GOSS. May 4. 1959.
